Der Ursprung: Der Sprung Am Anfang

das Wort / the word: der Ursprung (m.), pl. die Ursprünge
Aussprache / pronunciation: OOR-shproong
Wortart / part of speech: Noun, masculine
Register: Philosophical, literary, scientific. A word that takes its subject seriously.

Der Sprung am Anfang / The Leap at the Beginning

Der Ursprung is not simply the beginning. Der Anfang is the beginning, the point where something starts. Der Beginn is the commencement, the formal start. Der Ursprung is something different. It is the ur- (original, primordial) combined with der Sprung (the leap, the jump). The original leap. The moment when something that did not exist came into being, not by gradual accumulation but by discontinuous emergence. An Ursprung is not a beginning you can approach smoothly from before it. It is a rupture. The before and the after are incommensurable.

This etymology fits Das Rheingold exactly. Wagner was composing the Vorabend, the evening before. Not the first opera of the Ring but the prequel that makes the Ring intelligible. He needed to find the moment before the drama, the state of the world before the theft, before the contract, before the curse. He needed the Ursprung of the cycle, and he found it in an E-flat chord that rises for 136 bars from the lowest register of the orchestra into something that sounds like the world before it had a name. The Prelude to Das Rheingold is the most famous musical Ursprung in the Western tradition. A single harmony, unchanging, generating all its overtones, building from nothing into the shimmer of the Rhine. Wagner spent his life working toward a music that felt like origin. In the Rheingold prelude he achieved it.

Ursprung und Geschichte / Origin and History

The philosopher Walter Benjamin, whose ghost walks through the Aufbruchmatt year in his interview from April, wrote a book called Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels (The Origin of German Tragic Drama). His use of Ursprung was deliberate and precise. He distinguished it from Entstehung (genesis, the process of coming-into-being over time) and Entwicklung (development, the gradual unfolding). Ursprung for Benjamin was the sudden emergence, the leap that creates a category rather than extending one. An Ursprung does not lead smoothly from what came before. It inaugurates.

This is the sense in which Das Rheingold functions as the Ring's Ursprung. It does not lead smoothly from anything. Wagner composed it after the other three operas were already in draft, because he realized he needed to show the moment before the drama began. The Vorabend was not written first. It was written to explain what could not be explained by working forward. You cannot show the origin of something while you are still inside the thing it originated. You have to step back, go under, go to the riverbed, and start from a single note.

Das Wort in der Wissenschaft und Philosophie / The Word in Science and Philosophy

Der Ursprung appears in scientific contexts in German where English would use origin: der Ursprung des Lebens (the origin of life), der Ursprung der Arten (the origin of species, Darwin's title in German translation). It appears in philosophical contexts where the question is not merely causal but ontological: not just how did this start but what kind of thing made this kind of start possible.

The word carries a seriousness that Anfang does not. You can say der Anfang des Films (the beginning of the film) but you would not say der Ursprung des Films unless you were making a philosophical claim about cinema's emergence as a form. Ursprung raises the stakes. It asserts that what is being examined is genuinely inaugural, genuinely discontinuous, genuinely first in a way that cannot be reduced to what preceded it. For the Aufbruchmatt year, Ursprung is June's word because June is the month of the Vorabend. The Ring has been building since January through the standalone operas: Holländer, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Tristan, Meistersinger. Now in June the Ring cycle itself begins, and it begins with the moment before the beginning. The E-flat under the Rhine. The gold before the theft. The world before the contract, before the curse, before the gods moved in.

Grammatik / Grammar

Der Ursprung is masculine. Plural die Ursprünge with umlaut.

Key constructions:

  • der Ursprung von etwas, the origin of something

  • ursprünglich (adj./adv.), original, originally (ursprünglich war geplant, originally it was planned)

  • ursprünglich has a second common meaning: primitive, elemental, in its original state (eine ursprüngliche Landschaft, a primeval landscape)

  • den Ursprung zurückverfolgen, to trace back to the origin

  • am Ursprung, at the source, at the origin

  • aus dem Ursprung, from the source

The adjective ursprünglich is one of the most useful words in the language precisely because it carries both meanings simultaneously. Something ursprünglich is both original (the first version of a thing) and primordial (prior to civilizational overlay). Both senses apply to the Rhine gold.

Die Verbindung zum Weg / Connection to the Walk

The June walk begins at the water because the water is where all origins are staged in this opera. Pier 15 before dawn, or as close to dawn as the walk allows, with the Prelude playing from the lowest audible frequency upward. The E-flat is not a dramatic statement. It is a question asked at the bottom of things: what was here before the drama started? What does the world sound like before anyone has made a decision that cannot be reversed?

Standing at the water's edge with the Prelude building, you are at the Ursprung of two things at once. The Ring's Ursprung, the moment Wagner chose to call the before of everything. And the walk's own Ursprung for June, the point from which the rest of the route unfolds. Federal Hall, Wall Street, the subway, the harbor. The walk is an argument that moves from origin to consequence. Pier 15 is where the argument begins. The gold is still in the river. Nobody has stolen it yet. The music is still pure possibility, all overtones, no theme, nothing decided.
