Aufbruch/Matt
Ein Wanderwerk in Zwölf Aufzügen. Wo Stadt und Mythos sich Begegnen.
Im Gange: Januar: Der Fliegende Holländer
Aufbruch/Matt is a year-long wandering practice through New York City, guided by the operas of Richard Wagner and accompanied by the slow, deliberate study of the German language. Each month pairs one Wagner opera with a carefully scored walk through the city. Specific streets, thresholds, crossings, pauses, and silences. Music, movement, and language unfold together. New York becomes a temporary stage. German becomes a working instrument rather than an academic subject.
This is not an opera guide, and it is not a tour. It is a method for listening, walking, and learning attentively.
Every month includes:
A scored walk you can follow
A listening sequence drawn from a single opera
A small set of German words, phrases, or lines anchored to place
Photographs taken in motion, as field notes
Optional essays and spoken reflections that expand the ideas
The operas are not treated as monuments. They are treated as engines of repetition, exile, temptation, inheritance, desire, and return. The German language is learned the same way: through recurrence, context, friction, and use.
You do not need prior knowledge of Wagner. You do not need to speak German. You only need time, curiosity, and a willingness to move slowly. Aufbruch means departure, setting out, beginning again. A Wanderwerk is a work that unfolds by walking. Start anywhere.
Or begin at the beginning.
