Wotan's spear is not a weapon in the ordinary sense. It is a legal document. The entire dramatic machinery is an extended meditation on what happens when the person or system responsible for enforcing contracts is also the person or system most interested in evading them.
This is not merely mythological. Wotan's situation has a clear real-world logic. He built the castle using labor he had no intention of paying for. When the bill comes due, he pays it with collateral he stole. He does not pay his debt. He transfers it. The giants accept stolen goods as settlement. The curse travels with the gold. The debt is never resolved, only deferred and transformed. Erda's warning is not mystical prediction. It is accounting. The books are wrong and the reckoning is coming. Vertrag in modern German carries the full weight of legal language. Einen Vertrag schließen, to conclude a contract. Einen Vertrag brechen, to break a contract. Vertragsrecht, contract law. The word is bureaucratic, precise, used in offices and law firms. Wagner took this word and put it at the center of a myth about the origins of civilization. He was not wrong to do so.
Vertrag und Vertrauen / Contract and Trust
The etymological proximity of Vertrag (contract) and Vertrauen (trust, März's word) is not accidental. Both carry the tragen root. Vertrauen is the trust you carry toward someone. Vertrag is the agreement you carry between you. In the absence of trust, the contract attempts to substitute. You write down what you agreed because you do not fully trust the other party to remember it the way you do.
Wotan has no Vertrauen with the giants. He makes a Vertrag with them precisely because trust is unavailable. The contract is the low-trust substitute for the relationship that does not exist. When the contract is also made in bad faith, you have the worst of all worlds: a binding instrument entered into without trust or good intent. This is Das Rheingold's founding situation. Everything else is aftermath.

The curse is already in motion. Der Vertrag was honored in the most minimal technical sense and violated in every sense that matters. This is what the intersection looks like now. It has always looked like this. The runes are just less visible.
